Austin, Texas Hazardous Pipeline Ordinance
In April of 2003 the City of Austin enacted an ordinance that regulates structures built near a pipeline transporting hazardous materials. The ordinance is designed to ensure greater public safety. The ordinance requires special construction standards, determined by the Fire Department, for new structures within 200 feet of a pipeline.
In addition, uses requiring special evacuation assistance are prohibited within 500 of such a pipeline unless it is a structure within 200-500 feet of the pipeline and the Fire Chief makes a safety recommendation to City Council.
